4/ Fairtrade Fortnight is from 22nd Sept to 5th Oct www.fairtrade.org.uk/fairtrade-fortnight-2025/  over these fourteen days we’ll be asking each of you to Do it Fair. We’ll be celebrating the difference we can all make when we choose Fairtrade and campaign as part of a UK-wide movement calling for a fairer system behind the things we consume every day.​With the world in a tailspin, fairness isn’t a given.​ But the power to get there is in our hands.​ Together, our actions can have a positive impact on real people’s lives.​ Fairer pay. Fairer treatment. Fairer futures.​That’s Fairtrade.​ It’s not just a label – it’s a movement.​So, whatever you do and however you do it:​ Do it Fair.

At a time of rising tensions in our communities and anti-immigration rhetoric in the political sphere, this resource could not be more timely.

The type of items needed for healthcare are spectacles, hearing aids, clinical uniforms (male and female), syringes, dental and surgical equipment such as callipers, forceps, bandages and plasters, clinical thermometers, stethoscopes, insulin meters, pulse oximeter surgical gloves, walking sticks, wheelchairs, blankets, bedsheets, clinical curtains, Medical and Health related books ( for a small community library). All medical items must be in date to pass customs.
The school needs ruck sacks, text books, pencils, pens, geometry sets & other items suitable for school children.  Also children’s shoes, children’s clothes, school uniforms. No adult clothes as there’s an embargo.

Fr Silvester is very grateful for any support we can give.

Please leave items in boxes each end of St Mary’s & at Holy Family.

Consider giving a home-made gift instead of buying a present, upcycling items or looking at your food shop and seeing what items you could buy differently, spending a bit more on loose fruit and veg for example.

2/ LIVE SIMPLY Tip of the Week.  A recent study at Cambridge University found that one quarter of Catholics observed the Friday abstinence from meat. This translates into saving 55,000 tons of carbon per year.  If all Catholics did this we would save 220,000 tons each year.  If we all had a second meat free day that would be 440,000 ton saved

4/  Children of all ages can combine reading with nature and the great outdoors at West Sussex libraries when taking part in Story Garden, the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge.

The annual initiative aims to encourage kids to keep reading over the school holidays with rewards available for completing the challenge, including a special medal and certificate.

The free activity runs right across the summer and children aged 4 to 11 can join in anytime from Saturday 12 July to Saturday 13 September.

Meanwhile, little ones aged four and under can join the Story Garden Mini Challenge and collect stickers as they share library books over the summer, before receiving a special gold sticker and certificate when they finish.

This is a great way to get young people interested in our environment and inspire them to take action to address climate change – one of our aims in West Sussex Libraries Climate Action and Adaption Plan.
