Urgent Message from Worthing 4 Refugees  In Worthing, there is an urgent need for host families.  I’m aware of at least 3 families who have lived here for a year, have settled (children in schools, adults are working, English learning going well etc.) and now face an extremely uncertain future because there are no new host families coming forward to host.  One of these families currently lives in a hotel with no access to a kitchen.  Families with children are the hardest to find accommodation for.

Their future is bleak unless host families are found.  Even if they find work, they are on minimum wage, and do not have sufficient money to pay for rental accommodation.  Even if they can scrape enough for the rent, landlords often need deposits and guarantors; these are impossible for our refugee friends.  So, what are their alternatives?  The county council will have no other options but to put them in temporary accommodation (perhaps a hotel, or B&B) that usually has no access to a kitchen, laundry, and they will be living in one room; or they are moved out of area causing them to start again with friendships, support and work.

Please can I ask therefore that you make known among your friends that there is a need for hosts.  Because these families have already been hosted, they know how to behave as guests and the hosts do not face the daunting challenge of helping them start a new life, nor dealing with the shock of leaving a country at war quickly.  it’s likely that they will be able to speak some English, so even communication will be easier.  And the thank you payment (tax free) is £500 per month.  As a host, you can set house rules, set a time limit (minimum 6 months), and guests are expected to contribute to normal living (housework etc.), so they do not need caring for as you might have a social guest to stay for a short time.
Please consider if you can help.  Please get the message out.  There is loads of information on government websites regarding hosting (https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/homes-for-ukraine-sponsor-guides), but if you would appreciate an informal chat, I can put you in touch with my contact at the county council.

Thanks so much for your support.
